Christy Brown

President

Alverno College

Location: Milwaukee , Wisconsin

Founded: 1887

Industry: Higher Education

Few leadership moments demand both courage and precision, and Christy Brown stepped into one of those moments when she assumed the presidency of Alverno College. Taking the helm amid severe financial instability and questions surrounding institutional viability, Brown moved decisively, guided by decades of executive experience across higher education, nonprofit leadership and law. Her early priority was clarity. By openly communicating the college’s true financial condition, she created the foundation for collective action and trust, setting in motion a comprehensive turnaround effort.

That effort reshaped Alverno’s trajectory within her first year. Brown led a disciplined reduction of a significant operating deficit, realigned academic programs to better match strategic priorities, renegotiated major vendor agreements and streamlined staffing with care and intention. In partnership with shared governance bodies, she guided the Board through the extraordinary step of declaring financial exigency, a decision rooted in preservation rather than retreat. These actions reflected her ability to balance urgency with inclusion, listening deeply while acting decisively.

Financial stabilization was paired with renewed opportunity. Brown cultivated record-setting philanthropy, securing one of the largest unrestricted gifts in the college’s history and inspiring a challenge gift that was fully realized ahead of schedule. These efforts strengthened advancement capacity and reinforced confidence among stakeholders. Governance was also restructured to align with national best practices, while a more diverse and accomplished executive team was assembled to support the next chapter of leadership.

As a Titan 100 Honoree, Brown is recognized for her ability to guide mission-driven organizations through complexity while delivering measurable outcomes. Her leadership reflects fiscal discipline paired with opportunity-seeking, always anchored in student success. She approaches the future of work with intentionality, emphasizing flexible and hybrid models, continuous learning and technological fluency. Faculty and staff development remains central, ensuring the institution adapts curriculum, pedagogy and operational practices to meet evolving student needs.

Brown’s energy is sustained by purpose. Engagement with students, particularly first-generation women and people of color, reinforces why the work matters. Their stories of belonging, confidence and transformation mirror her own journey and inform her leadership. She draws equal inspiration from graduates entering critical roles across healthcare, business and social services, affirming Alverno’s role as a builder of community capacity.

Her aspiration to communicate fluently across languages and disciplines reflects a broader commitment to inclusion and connection. Whether engaging families, partners or global peers, Brown values understanding as a catalyst for impact.

Over the next five years, she envisions Alverno College as financially strong, academically bold and widely recognized for its student-centered approach. Enrollment growth, improved retention, refreshed market-responsive programs and expanded partnerships define that horizon. Athletics, flexible pathways and employer collaboration strengthen visibility and engagement, while the institution’s distinctive abilities-based framework remains central.

Brown’s leadership exemplifies resilience, vision and execution. Through transparency and resolve, she has advanced Alverno College toward renewal, ensuring it endures as a place where education empowers lives and communities thrive.
