Dedication to healing has shaped every phase in the career of Ashok Rai, MD as President and Chief Executive Officer of Prevea Health. His commitment began with his decision to pursue medicine, driven by the belief that care starts with presence and understanding. Early work in hospital medicine, followed by creating the first hospitalist program at HSHS St. Mary’s Hospital Medical Center, reinforced that conviction. He continues to see patients in geriatrics and acute rehabilitation, grounding leadership in direct experience with those he serves.
That connection to patients guided Prevea Health through challenging moments, including the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Rai ensured access remained equitable by removing barriers that restricted care in other environments. The same philosophy influenced the development of a recent three-year plan focused on optimizing experience, elevating primary care, strengthening key services, advancing partnerships and expanding reach across Wisconsin.
Progress reflects these priorities. Prevea Health expanded online scheduling, standardized physician templates and grew its presence in the Fox Valley. These efforts increased visits and strengthened trust among the people who rely on Prevea Health. Dr. Rai views each initiative as part of a broader path centered on purpose and connection.
His recognition as a Titan 100 Honoree stems from this blend of clinical insight and organizational leadership. Several members of his leadership team maintain active practices, ensuring decisions reflect genuine understanding of patient needs. He encourages value-based care models that reward prevention and promote healthier lives rather than volume-driven outcomes.
Learning drives Dr. Rai’s approach to leadership. He draws insight from other industries and applies those lessons to improve care delivery. This curiosity led him to serve on several non-healthcare boards, giving him exposure to perspectives that sharpen strategic thinking. His appointment to the Universities of Wisconsin board of regents and his role chairing the business and finance committee broaden his view of how systems evolve and how institutions support their communities.
A personal health experience added new meaning to his mission. After discovering type 2 diabetes in 2022 and undergoing mitral valve surgery shortly after, Dr. Rai began sharing his story to encourage others to pursue preventive care. He uses this experience to remind people that early attention can change outcomes.
His influence extends across Wisconsin and nationally. He served as Chairman of the American Medical Group Association and testified before Congress on national incentive models, contributing to discussions that shape how organizations deliver care. Community and statewide board service further reflect his commitment to advancing well-being beyond the walls of Prevea Health.
Dr. Rai believes leadership in health care is a continuous practice built on humility, curiosity and the desire to improve life for others. That conviction guides him each day as he works to support the people and communities Prevea Health is honored to serve.
