Conviction anchored in faith has long shaped how David Sanders approaches leadership. His work in higher education is guided by a belief that purpose, courage and trust in a greater plan unlock possibilities others may never attempt. As President of City Colleges of Chicago–Malcolm X College, Sanders leads with boldness rooted in service, creating an environment where belief in students and staff becomes a catalyst for achievement.
One of the most meaningful outcomes of his leadership has been a dramatic turnaround in enrollment across student populations that had previously been declining. Sanders focused particular attention on Black male students, listening closely to their experiences and responding with intention. A mentoring initiative was established and paired with an expanded study abroad opportunity, creating both personal connection and aspirational exposure. The response from students was immediate and affirming, reinforcing that they felt seen, supported and valued. Completion rates followed enrollment gains as students leaned into a campus culture designed for their success.
That same intentionality extended to other student groups. Through focused outreach, inclusive programming and purposeful marketing, Malcolm X College became a place where every demographic could recognize itself. Rather than isolating efforts, Sanders emphasized representation and belonging across all student activities. The result has been growth across the board, confirming his belief that when care is genuine and visible, students respond with commitment and persistence.
At the heart of this progress is a philosophy of servant leadership. Sanders has cultivated a culture where faculty, staff and administrators are treated with respect, compassion and opportunity. Professional development, training and networking are not viewed as perks but as responsibilities of leadership. By modeling care internally, Sanders ensures that those same behaviors extend naturally to students. A welcoming campus, in his view, is one where love, belief and accountability coexist.
Recognition as a Titan 100 Hall of Fame Honoree reflects Sanders’ understanding that honors are not destinations but byproducts. He views recognition as shared validation of collective effort rather than personal achievement. For him, being a Titan is demonstrated daily through discipline, dedication and unwavering pursuit of mission, not through accolades.
Sanders’ vision for Malcolm X College is ambitious and inclusive. He is committed to building a caring campus recognized for excellence in outcomes and reputation. Every member of the institution must see their future reflected in that vision, knowing their growth matters both now and long-term. Students are challenged to believe that their goals are attainable, even when the path is difficult. While perfection may remain elusive, the pursuit of it remains nonnegotiable.
Legacy, for Sanders, centers on stewardship. He seeks to leave the college stronger than he found it, having modeled fearless leadership and prepared future leaders to continue expanding pathways for student success. His guidance is unwavering: fear limits progress, faith fuels it. By attacking the future with confidence and unshakable belief, Sanders continues to build a campus where nothing is dismissed as impossible and every individual is encouraged to rise toward their calling.
