As President of City Colleges of Chicago–Malcolm X College, Sanders leads with boldness rooted in service, creating an environment where belief in students and staff becomes a catalyst for achievement.
One of the most meaningful outcomes of his leadership has been a dramatic turnaround in enrollment across student populations that had previously been declining. Sanders focused particular attention on Black male students, listening closely to their experiences and responding with intention. A mentoring initiative was established and paired with an expanded study abroad opportunity, creating both personal connection and aspirational exposure. The response from students was immediate and affirming, reinforcing that they felt seen, supported and valued. Completion rates followed enrollment gains as students leaned into a campus culture designed for their success.
That same intentionality extended to other student groups. Through focused outreach, inclusive programming and purposeful marketing, Malcolm X College became a place where every demographic could recognize itself. Rather than isolating efforts, Sanders emphasized representation and belonging across all student activities.
