Mark Plitzuweit is always careful to point out that as we work on building a legacy, it is the people along the way who make it all possible. “Family, friends, co-workers and supervisors all play a significant role in forming our career paths and the accomplishments we enjoy,” he said. “The legacy I wish to leave in my professional space is that other educational leaders embrace what my team and I have implemented by identifying the uniqueness of the individual, rather than focusing blindly on the entire group.”

As the chief executive officer of Edkey® Inc., Plitzuweit has embraced the uniqueness of others and understands the constantly evolving world of education. Edkey® Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides high-quality educational services to a variety of institutions, empowering the fulfillment of their individual missions. The organization’s services promote the improved quality of individual and family life, serving 28 schools and programs, operating exclusively in Arizona.

According to Plitzuweit, the ideologies of what effective models of education have been for 100 years are no longer adequate. The antiquated template of straight rows, lecture-based and test results-driven education has left far too many students feeling both rejected and neglected, he said.

“To change the way that we educate all students, the shift to inclusive and effective teaching strategies must constantly be evaluated and modified based on current needs, not trends,” said Plitzuweit, a Titan 100 Hall of Fame inductee. “Our educators will be given the autonomy to extend the curriculum for those students whose abilities lie outside the standard learning parameters.”

As a leader, Plitzuweit said that over the past two years as a titan, his greatest accomplishment has been identifying the importance and implementation of self-care, not just for himself, but for the 1,000 employees that he works with every day.

“The challenges in education have continued to increase, placing additional stressors on the staff and students, creating the potential for an unwell environment,” he said. Many people have simply forgotten how to ‘be,’ which begs the need for implementation of advanced health and wellness programs for all employees which extends to additional resources for our students and their families.”

As a mentor, Plitzuweit recognizes these challenges and encourages others to embrace their authentic self. “As you begin your personal quest in becoming a true industry leader, figure out what you are passionate about and do that,” he said. “Find those special individuals that will support you on your quest and walk alongside you to help identify the gaps and blind spots that future titans don’t even know exist.”
