From the time Jason Weldon was born, his father always had side businesses to supplement his income as a Philadelphia police officer. Weldon would help his father cut grass, plow snow and sell belt buckles. Unknowingly, he was learning entrepreneurial traits that he would use to build his business years later.
At the age of 14, Weldon fell in love with the art of blending music together to make people dance. He started Synergetic Sounds first as a DJ company while attending high school. He successfully grew the brand and by the time he was 25, Weldon had a small team of full-time employees and a group of DJs, adding service options that included professional lighting.
The success led him to transition the company from a DJ company to a professional audio and visual company. Now, Synergetic is one of the premier audio-visual providers in the region with over 30 full-time employees who help 700+ customers a year with any type of audio-visual requirement they may have for live events.
Synergetic provides audio, lighting, video and staging to customers who are producing meaningful events. Its customer could be a 10,000-person concert, a multi-day corporate meeting or a tented event in a backyard to celebrate a special milestone.
“Delivering more than we promise is number one on our list,” said Weldon. “I learned this with my dad – sometimes, all that means is being honest.”
According to Weldon, Synergetic transitioned into what it is today because he saw the need to disrupt the status quo. “That doesn’t make you very popular with your friendly competitors, but I had the courage to keep at it, slowly,” he said. “I have never given up, no matter how many obstacles were put in my way.”
Since transitioning to audio-visual services, Synergetic has helped at least 14,000 customers while generating over $50 million in revenue. Under Weldon’s leadership, the company was named the best A/V company in the state by PA Meetings and Events for two years, received the customer service excellence of the year award from the Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, and was named one of the 100 fastest growing companies by the Philadelphia Forum.
As a leader, Weldon said he takes risks every day. “Risk goes hand in hand with being a leader, especially in a growing business,” he said. “You have to be all-in on what you are doing, and when you are all-in, the biggest risk is in the people you choose to be on your bus because you absolutely need a team to go far and grow your company.”
