Tom Kraus has distinguished himself as a leader as the chief operating officer and SVP at Together Credit Union and in the financial services industry. “He is best known for challenging the idea that just because something has always been done that way doesn’t mean it is the best way,” said his colleagues. “He is always looking for new and innovative ways to optimize operations that reflect market conditions and consumer habits.”
Together Credit Union started in 1939 when eight Anheuser-Busch employees pooled their savings, which totaled $55, and petitioned the state of Missouri to open a credit union so they could provide sound financial advice to their co-workers. That original organization was joined by several other credit unions and in 2019, the organization changed its name to signify its significant membership growth. The credit union now has 14 branches serving individuals and families in 180 zip codes in Missouri and Illinois.
The member-owned not-for-profit financial institution was named Forbes Best-in-State Credit Union for exceeding the national average for banks in general satisfaction and launched the “Saves for Savings” program in 2023 that enables $300 Earn and Learn Savings Accounts for local students for every save by CITY SC during their regular season.
When the COVID-19 pandemic intensified, the need for innovative fintech was amplified. However, Kraus wasn’t satisfied with technology that only focused on convenience. “He recognized the importance of personalization and worked to incorporate member data and feedback into all initiatives,” said his staff. “Rather than a product-centric approach, this member-centric focus helped the credit union achieve year-over-year growth in new membership.”
Kraus has also distinguished himself through new product launches and advances and leads the industry by investing in the St. Louis Market. He has been invited to speak on behalf of the credit union at industry roundtables, conferences and events and serves as the credit union’s main press contact.
Under his leadership, the credit union has doubled the lending portfolio, set personal records for direct, real estate and dealer lending and consolidated and relaunched a new brand identity.
“One of the things I take great pride in is the ability to get people aligned behind a common goal or plan and inspire them to achieve that goal,” said Kraus. “It’s like being a sports coach and finding ways to utilize each individual’s skills to the best of the teams benefit while ensuring the entire locker room is built around trust and confidence.”
For his influence in the industry and the St. Louis area, Kraus has been named a titan.
