Mark Huth MD

President and Chief Executive Officer
Group Health Cooperative of South-Central Wisconsin

Location: Dane County, WI
Founded: 1976
Industry: Healthcare and Health Insurance

Since the arrival of Dr. Mark Huth, Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin has seen consistent growth and financial health. But the real measure of success is how the cooperative is viewed from the outside. GHC-SCW took the unusual step of offering a money-back guarantee to patients, and the health plan received NCQA’s top rating for quality and patient experience.

In his role as president and CEO, Huth’s fingerprints are on several of the organization’s successes. He deflects credit, though, to his team.

“Leadership is not about standing out in front and expecting others to follow,” he said. “It is about standing shoulder-to-shoulder, working together to build a shared vision with every member of your team and then making sure everyone has what they need to make it happen. The only time a leader is out front is during times of challenges and danger. In times of success, you stand in back and let your team receive their well-deserved praise.”

GHC-SCW is a nonprofit, member-owned health plan providing care and health insurance services to over 80,000 members. “We are a quality-driven cooperative built on collaboration, community involvement, innovation and belonging,” the company said. “It is essential that all employees, members and patients feel secure and welcome, that the opinions and contributions of all individuals are respected and that all voices are heard.”

Huth did his undergraduate studies at Concordia University in Portland, Oregon, where he was a presidential scholar. He completed his medical school training at Oregon Health and Sciences University in Portland, where he was recognized for “outstanding dedication and skill in the care of patients.” He did his residency and training and served as chief resident at University of Wisconsin-Madison.

In 2007, Huth began his career with GHC-SCW as a primary care doctor and has risen through the ranks ever since. His roles at the cooperative have included provider site chief, chief of staff, and chief medical officer. Since 2016, Huth has served in his current role of CEO and also serves as the president of the board of directors.

Huth’s involvement and participation in the Dane County Health Council has helped strengthen the Madison Public School Foundation’s Adopt-a-School program, which provides access to healthcare for thousands of uninsured children. The program includes free checkups, immunizations and medications, as well as vision checks and glasses for uninsured students.

Huth believes healthcare is a human right and, in keeping with that belief, GHC-SCW is committed to helping 100 new refugees each year. In years past, GHC-SCW has cared for individuals and families from Iraq, Syria, Vietnam and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. In 2021, GHC-SCW welcomed 100 refugees from Afghanistan, including 39 who evacuated following the Taliban takeover of the country and relocated to Wisconsin.

On a deeper, more personal level, Dr. Huth and his wife, Meghan, have made it their life-long mission to provide and deliver medical supplies and medications to struggling communities in Ethiopia. Meghan is the founder and leader of Roots Ethiopia, a non-profit organization dedicated to children in Ethiopia, and together, both Dr. Huth and Meghan, have traveled to Ethiopia numerous times to deliver supplies to families in dire need.
