Steve Biljan and his co-founder Erik Osland launched evolvedMD as a medication management company in 2015, following the death of Osland’s father due to prescription therapy errors.
Their journey took a transformative turn when they recognized the prevalence of depression symptoms among elderly patients. In response, they pivoted their approach and successfully scaled the company across more than 40 sites in Arizona, achieving a remarkable 10-fold growth in revenue since the company’s inception in 2017.
“For me, the biggest risk was saying yes to my co-founder, Erik Osland, when he came up with the idea for evolvedMD and asked me to help him build what is now one of the fastest-growing companies in the country,” Biljan said. “Building the company from nothing while hearing over and over from industry experts that it would never work took a lot emotionally, and that resilience and risk are what have made the reward so great.
“I believe I was equipped to take it on because early in my career I also took a big risk in prioritizing development and exposure over title and pay. That allowed me to learn, build expertise, grow and see business from multiple perspectives and lenses, giving me the confidence to take the risk that has developed into a 100-plus person company and growing.”
EvolvedMD is poised for continued growth in the coming years. The company plans to establish a presence in Utah and Colorado. Bolstered by a recent $5.4 million Series A funding round, evolvedMD will enhance its operational capabilities and technological infrastructure to support additional patients and providers, the company said.
EvolvedMD has been named as one of the Best Places to Work by the Phoenix Business Journal and earned a spot on the Inc. 5000 Fastest Growing Companies in America list. The company also has published influential articles in prominent publications such as The Hertel Report and the Business Journals, establishing itself as a thought leader in the industry.
From initially assisting three providers in a single office, evolvedMD now serves over one million patients through its network of 120 providers across more than 40 sites.
“If someone comes into one of our partner PCPs and displays depressive symptoms, that PCP can order a psychiatric consult on the spot. The impact it has is indescribable — we’re saving lives,” Biljan said. “Continuously, every day, helping people who are emotionally hurting and making a difference, that is what I am most proud of.”
