Joseph Levine & Sons Memorial Chapel, Inc

Location: Philadelphia, NJ
Founded: 1883
Industry: Funeral Services

Joseph Levine & Sons Memorial Chapel, Inc. was founded by Jonathon D. Levine’s great-greatgrandfather, Louis Levine, in 1883, and it has been owned and operated by a member of the Levine family for five generations. It made sense, then, that Jonathan D. Levine would continue the family legacy in serving the community just as his forefathers have done for over 130 years.

Jonathon D. Levine was 13 when he started working at the funeral home, learning all aspects of the business under the direction of his father, Joseph Levine. Today, as managing partner, Jonathon D. Levine takes the lessons he’s learned over the years and applies them to running the business and encouraging his employees.

“Each day, I have the privilege and the pressure of supervising a generational family business,” he said. “Although I was not a part of the story from the start, I am tasked to bring all aspects of our company into the future, but also keeping our standards of tradition, service and dignity at the forefront.”

Joseph Levine and Sons is in the process of expanding to a new location, one that will offer a different feel for funeral services “by providing a place of warmth and light as opposed to dark and stuffy. We are taking an old-fashioned business and evolving it to integrate more modern options for the families we serve,” the company said.

Running a funeral home is a unique career path, but it’s one that Levine has embraced. His team said Levine has the right traits to run the business successfully.

“Throughout his youth, he was instilled with the traits a good funeral director should have,” the team said. Those traits, his team said, include compassion, communication, reliability, empathy, dedication, humility and honesty.

Levine participates in various organizations and is regarded as a leader in his community. He serves on the Klein Center Board of Directors, received the Esther Leah Ritz Next Generation of JCC Leadership Award, and he’s an active member of Golden Slipper Club & Charities.

Levine is a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University with a B.A. in economic management and holds a degree in mortuary science from Mercer County Community College. He’s the former head coach for the Upper Dublin varsity lacrosse team and former head coach of the Council Rock North varsity lacrosse team. He’s a board member of Temple Sinai and managing director for the Chevra Bikur Cholim Cemetery.

“Being in service to others is not only gratifying, but it is my hope that the positive ripple effects will encourage others to pay it forward,” Levine said. “It will be, by my continuing example in the community, to always promote positive change and be the leader who pushes ever forward to be the best version of themselves and to be regarded as an outstanding individual.”
